Trident Kraken vs. Otterbox Defender
I bought both of these through Amazon and have been trying each for about a week now.
Cost
Both can be found for almost the same price although the Defender case does come with a clip in holster.
Packaging
The Kraken packaging is more environmentally friendly and more compact. This is especially noticeable since both cases are essentially the same size
Instructions
This could prove frustrating for some. Instructions for each case are enclosed within the case. This makes no sense as some may not be able to get the case open to read the instruction on how to open the case. Not very intelligent or customer friendly packaging by either company in this regard. The Kraken instructions call for removing a thin film from the inside of the clear cover - however I could not see or feel this thin film for removal. I do not know why other than the thin film was previously removed and the case then returned for later purchase by me. Both sets of instructions are easy to read and follow.
Hard case
Both have a solid build with no obvious deficiencies or defects. Corners of the Kraken hard case appear to be a little thicker but the Defender hard case is thicker overall. This actually works well if you have larger hands, not so well if you have smaller hands. Droid X fits snuggly into both hard cases. Both hard cases easily snap together and stay together. Both are fairly easy to unsnap for removal. The top ridge of the Kraken screen protector is not as beveled as the edges or bottom and all are steeper than the Defender bevels. This steep beveling makes it very difficult to touch and drag down the drop screen as well as making it difficult to drag widgets to other screens. It is very frustrating for me. Both cases keep the screen from contact with surfaces when put face down.
Hard case Silicon Cover
I like the feel of the Kraken better than the Defender. Not as sticky but not slippery either. The corners of the cover are thicker (tapers in the middle slightly) than the Defender's which provides even more protection on the areas most likely to take impact. The Kraken cover is more thorough in covering the openings for hearing and speech vs. the Defender. The Kraken has a thin white mesh over the openings to keep dust out. The Defender openings have no such protection and are open to the air. The touch buttons are easier to feel and manipulate vs. the Defender. The Kraken also comes with a thin protective film for the camera lens and flash. Unfortunately using it can create glare in the picture when using the flash. The port coverings are not as snug as the Defender (Defender has an extra ridge along the edge for a tighter fit) and not as easy to grab with the finger. The Kraken port coverings open downward to the back, whereas they open upward to the front on the Defender. I think upward to the front is a better design as it aids in weather resistance although downward does seem to be easier to open using the thumb. The Defender cover does not seal as well along the bottom of the touch screen as the Kraken. Overall both covers appear to be well constructed.
Overall
I would go with the Kraken except for one thing. The beveling on the sides of the touch screen is truly frustrating to me. Based on this and the fact the phone (any phone) needs to be user friendly, I will have to give the Defender the win vs. the Kraken. In reality though - you cannot go wrong with either of these products for protecting the Droid X.
Otterbox Defender: 4.5/5 stars
Trident Kraken: 4.3/5 stars
