(More customer reviews)I tried using this shell with the insides of two different official Microsoft controllers. I wished to use as many of the original parts as possible but did have to use the following that were supplied with the kit: Start and Back buttons, Ring around the outside of the start button. I also used the thumbsticks and the d-pad supplied with the kit, but I can't recall if I *had* to use them, as I planned to replace these with the newer parts anyway. The new thumbsticks and d-pad are great, so no complaints there. I had to use the kit start and back buttons only because the originals were not the right length in the new shell and didn't fit. This did not bother me. I don't like the ring around the home button. I had to use this because the original would not fit. The new ring is not divided into quadrants and when it is lit up the light blends into other areas, if that makes sense. In other words, when the controller top left indicator should be on, almost the entire ring is actually lit up. Not a problem, but not great. I used the original silver home button instead of the provided one because the one in the kit was cheap looking and not attractive.
The reason I give this product 3 stars is not because of the buttons as I described above, but because the overall fit when the controller is put together. The fit where the top and bottom shell meet near the bumpers is not quite right. It's not possible to close tighter (I tried multiple times and can assure that I had everything in its proper place) and there is a slight gap (only a millimeter or two) that just won't close all the way. Not too much of a problem, but it prevents this from being a very good or excellent product. It is acceptable, but not better than that.
I do have to say the green color looks really good and I love that aspect of this controller shell. Also, it would be nice if the kit included start and back buttons and triggers and bumpers that were in a matching green. Instead the ones in my kit were white. I would love a solid green controller in this color, but even using every part supplied in the kit, the result is a two-toned controller in green and white -- actually, three-toned if you count the grey piece on the bottom where your chatpad or headset plugs in. I don't mind this piece being grey (complements the d-pad and thumbsticks) if everything else is just green, but it doesn't look very good with the white for the other pieces.
